​Adverse weather events such as cold, drought, heat and waterlogging have become more frequent and result in significant crop yield losses. A common feature of all these events is the higher accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in plants. This harmful accumulation of ROS is referred to as ‘oxidative stress’. All critical developmental stages of a crop can be affected by oxidative stress and damage. Oxidative stress at the vegetative growth stage leads to stunted plants and limited root growth, resulting in delayed establishment and development. Oxidative stress during reproductive growth is proven to reduce fruit-set and yield in crops. Oxidative stress is therefore one of the key reasons why crops do not achieve their genetic growth and yield potential.
