Super Fifty® 0-0-8 is a highly-concentrated alkaline extract from Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed, highest on the world market (500 g/l concentration). The Ascophyllum nodosum used to manufacture Super Fifty® 0-0-8 is sourced from the unpolluted bays and inlets on the west and south west coasts of Ireland, in north-western Europe. The product is registered for use in organic production by the Organic Trust and is listed by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI). Super Fifty® 0-0-8 seaweed extract significantly increases crop performance and yield in a number of growth conditions. In particular, significant increases in yield are achieved in conditions of abiotic stress when using Super Fifty® 0-0-8, effects which are observed to manifest in the crop as a whole and regionally within the root-zone and stem (lettuce crop, Sharma S et al., AFBI, 2009A). Greenhouse university trials also demonstrate substantial increases in lettuce weight, leaf number and stem and leaf size, in non-abiotic stress conditions. Thus, Super Fifty® 0-0-8 provides a means of increasing crop growth, performance, yield and quality in both stressed and non-stressed conditions.
Super Fifty® 0-0-8 seaweed extract is shown to favorably alter the ratio of perfect:mis-shapen fruit (sweet pepper crop, Sharma S et al., AFBI, 2007A, meta-analysis). These effects are observed to be significant over a total harvest period spanning three-four months and give rise to an increased yield of high-grade fruit (approximately 10%) and a corresponding reduced yield of low-grade fruits. In addition, significant increases in average fruit size can also be achieved (sweet pepper, Sharma S et al., AFBI, 2007A).
Super Fifty® 0-0-8 seaweed extract has a dual affect within the root zone, giving rise to significant increases in root growth while also influencing the dynamics of root colonizing bacteria. In particular, Super Fifty® 0-0-8 has been shown to stimulate rooting and give rises to increased root numbers (mung bean, Sharma et al., AFBI, 2009B). In abiotic stress conditions, significant increases in root weight is also achieved on treatment with this seaweed extract (lettuce crop, Sharma S et al., AFBI, 2009A). Thus, Super Fifty® 0-0-8 provides a means of enhancing root growth in a number of conditions.
Soil bacteria counts
Super Fifty® 0-0-8 significantly influences the dynamics of soil microbiota over time. In particular, Pseudomonas spp. numbers substantially increase in the root zone following application with this seaweed extract over a four month period (hydroponically grown sweet peppers, Sharma et al.,AFBI, 2007A). The importance of soil microbial dynamics in crop health is well known, with species such as Pseudomonas florescens commonly used as biocontrol agents to enhance crop health and responsiveness to pathogen. Super Fifty® 0-0-8 may be used therefore, as a natural means of increasing soil bacteria numbers, particularly those which colonize the root zone.
High antioxidant potential
Super Fifty® 0-0-8 seaweed extract contains exceptionally high levels of natural antioxidants, greatly exceeding levels found in green tea and ascorbic acid (O’Brien N et al., UCC, 2008). This unique property of Super Fifty® 0-0-8 is likely to impart a myriad of beneficial effects on crop health, growth, quality and yield. Indeed, a consistent feature of trials undertaken on this seaweed extract to-date is the optimal effectiveness of the product when used at lower rather than higher applications rates.
