Where is BioAtlantis based?
Our main office is located in Tralee, County Kerry on the West of Ireland. It is easily accessible by air via either Cork or Kerry Airport. The seaweed is also harvested on the west coast of Ireland. What is Laminaria spp.?
This genus represents thirty one species of brown algae which are commonly known as “kelp”. This genus is characterized by long, leathery laminae and large size. It is found in the North Atlantic Ocean and the North Pacific Ocean at depths from 8m to 30m, depending on the degree of solar illumination. Certain species of Laminaria have been shown to contain bioactive elements that have significant benefits in several applications, thereby providing natural solutions for modern day problems. What is Ascophyllum nodosum?
Ascophyllum nodosum is a brown seaweed closely related to Fucus. It is recognisable by single bladders in long, flattened fronds. The fronds hang downwards draping sheltered intertidal rocks. Many fronds grow from the base and the plant generally regenerates new fronds from the base when one of the larger fronds becomes damaged. Ascophyllum nodosum is harvested for use in alginates, fertilisers and for the manufacture of seaweed meal for animal consumption. It has also long been used as an organic fertilizer. Why are plant root bacteria so important?
The importance of soil microbial dynamics in crop health is well known, with species such as Pseudomonas florescens commonly used as biocontrol agents to enhance crop health and responsiveness to pathogen.
What does “chelated iron” mean?
Bioavailability of iron (Fe) to plants in its mineral form can be low. Chelated iron is the soluble form of the element Fe. When soluble in water, it is readily available for assimilation by plants. What is laminarin?
Laminarin is the principal reserve polymeric carbohydrate in seaweeds. Laminarin is a polysaccharide comprising 16 to 31 linked glucose residues, mainly of (1,3)(1,6) linked ß-D-glucans. It is found exclusively in the fronds of brown algae, mainly of the Laminaria genus such as Laminaria hyperborea, Laminaria digitata.

What is fucoidan?
Fucoidans are heteropolymeric carbohydrates found in the cell walls of Ascophyllum nodosum and Laminaria species. They are sulphated polysaccharides composed of α-(1-3) and/or α-(1-4) linked α-L-fucose subunits.

What are the properties of fucoidan as a Plant Strengthener?
Fucoidans are known to be potent antioxidants when tested in trials for inhibition of superoxide radical and hydroxyl radical formation. Antioxidants counteract the damage by free radicals and oxidative stress, thereby preventing premature aging and chronic disease. Fucoidans have also been reported to have several pharmacological or therapeutic properties, exhibiting anti-bacterial, anti-viral (HIV), anti-tumour, anti-thrombotic, anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive and anticoagulatory effects.

What is alginate?
Alginate is a polyuronide consisting of ß-(1,4)-D-mannuronic acid and α-(1,4)-L-guluronic acid that is found in the cell wall of brown algae. In human and animal models they can function as heavy metal binders, cell immobilisers and immune system stimulators. Oligoalginates are known to act as prebiotics, stimulating growth of beneficial bacteria in the intestine and in the soil.
